Potomac is situated in Montgomery County, Maryland, northwest of Washington, DC and covers an area of 26.6 sq. miles. It is bounded on the south by the Potomac River and its eastern border traces the western side of the Washington Beltway (I-495) continuing up the I-270 to just north of Montrose Road. Watts Branch forms the western border, to South Glen Road, which it follows along Norton Rd and Sandy Landing Rd back to the river. To the east lie Bethesda and North Bethesda. Finally, Rockville is to the north and the unincorporated area of Travilah is to the northwest.

Potomac is made of numerous sub-suburbs, communities, and subdivisions. Lot sizes tend to be smaller toward the northeast where homes tend to be smaller than the large estates and mansions, which are located toward the south and western parts of the area.
Noteworthy Attractions
Billy Goat Trail:
The Billy Goat Trail is a 4.7-mile between the Chesapeake &Ohio Canal and the Potomac River near Great Falls in Montgomery County, Maryland. The trail (in three sections) offers magnificent views of the river and rapids from high rocky outposts.
Cabin John Regional Park:
Cabin John Regional Park provides numerous amenities for County residents, including a large well-equipped playground, party, cooking and camping areas, hiking and bike trails, an indoor tennis facility, baseball and a modern skating rink. The park is well known for its miniature train that provides rides around a section of the park during spring and summer.
Falls Road Golf Course:
Operated by Montgomery County, Falls Rd Golf Course is a 150 acre, 18-hole course with driving range, putting practice area and restaurant. The course offers a number of classes and lessons through the “Pro shop.”
Potomac Community Center:
The center offers learning and class opportunities, as well as a gymnasium and entertainment equipment for use by residents.
