It was originally a hub of dairy farming and a vacation spot for area residents because of its convenient location along the L&R Railroad line which would eventually become Washington and Old Dominion (W&OD) Railroad. Like its nearby neighbor—Reston—Herndon is accessible via the Dulles Toll Road and the Silver Line of the Washington DC Metro.
The Downtown Historic District is what lets you know that you have arrived in Herndon. The original train station and caboose are located there, as well as the Town Hall and small local ‘Mom and Pop’ businesses which still reflect the feeling of the town the way it used to be in the early days.
Beyond the Historic downtown area there are many areas with newly built custom homes as well as properties that were built in the 1990’s and beyond. There are some condominium and townhome developments, but the majority of the local real estate are true ‘bedroom community’ family homes and the residents take advantage of nearby schools, parks, camps, and community centers.
The Historic District is more than just the center of town. It also boasts a promenade of the most delightful and appealing homes in the area. There are bungalows, stately center hall colonials, charming Victorians and even craftsman style homes. Browse the newest real estate listings in Herndon, VA.
