Historic Fredericksburg is conveniently located halfway between Washington, D.C. and Richmond along I-95. The city is bordered to the east by King George County, to the south by Caroline County, to the west by Spotsylvania County, and to the north by Stafford County. Between 1671 and 1727 when the settlement of Fredericksburg received its official charter from the House of Burgesses and was named in honor of Frederick, Prince of Wales, the Rappahannock River attracted business owners interested in the commerce opportunities the river offered. You know what they say—location, location, location. As a result, large plantation homes sprang up on the banks of the river.
Within minutes you can walk down Caroline or Princess Ann streets to visit quaint shops, cafes, bars and restaurants, or stroll over and visit the “Sunken Road” and Marye’s Heights where more than 18,000 lost their lives between December 11 and 15th of 1862 during the Civil War Battle of Fredericksburg. You can also walk down to Caroline Street and visit the historic Rising Sun Tavern, built by George Washington’s brother Charles and visited by George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and others. Just two blocks away from there you can visit the Hugh Mercer Apothecary Shop where you can view the old medical methods used in the 18th century.

For a truly enlightened experience, come and see the Fredericksburg National Cemetery Annual Luminary—part of the Memorial Day events where each of the 15,300 graves are lit with luminaries. The event is sponsored by the local Boy and Girl Scout clubs. Taps is played every 30 minutes that evening and park service volunteers are there with true stories, guided tours or answers to your questions.

Bringing Broadway to Virginia, reserve your seats for such blockbusters as Grease, Hair Spray, Evita, Man of La Mancha, Hello Dolly, West Side Story, The Sound of Music, The Full Monty, Phantom, Fiddler on the Roof, White Christmas and on and on. The theater offers six different shows a year.
