Referred to as a place Where Main Street Still Exists, Del Ray is a quaint community in Alexandria City. Tucked between Arlington, Crystal City, and Old Town Alexandria, and only five miles outside of Washington, DC, Del Ray is located off I-395, Rt. 7, and Rt. 1, and close to I-495 through Old Town Alexandria. Del Rey is home to one of the top music venues in the D.C. area—Birchmere Music Hall—a barnlike intimate music performance space with a supper club-style main hall and a standing-only bandstand area. Del Ray Artisans, next to the Community School, is a community art organization with monthly exhibits. Stroll the main and side streets to see the various examples of Art Deco and Craftsman architecture. Wander throughout Del Ray, and you’ll see a variety of impressive murals on the buildings.
Just north of Del Ray is Beverly Park, locally known as The Pit, which has recently been renovated and is popular with local families. With Old Town Alexandria right next door, there’s tons of American history to be explored as well. Since 1994, the Del Ray Farmers Market takes place year-round at Miller Square every Saturday from 8am-12pm. There are many options such as fruits and vegetables, meats, cheeses, breads, cut flowers, baked goods, and fresh pasta.
Del Ray is home to some great events, including their annual Thanksgiving Day 5-mile race—the Del Ray Turkey Trot. The event has grown quite a bit over the last several years, going from a few hundred local residents, to drawing a friendly and ready for turkey and pie crowd of a few thousand! Residents busy cooking stand along the race route outside their homes to cheer the runners and walkers. Even dogs and strollers get in on the racing action!
Art on the Avenue is a multi-cultural arts festival that’s held the first Saturday in October every year. There are hundreds of art vendors, live music stages, and 50,000 visitors. First Thursday is a series of free outdoor street festivals along Mount Vernon Avenue. Every first Thursday of the month from April to September hosts a special event, music, and food from 6-9pm.
