Home Decor Tips

Interior design seems to come easy to some, but it's a struggle for most of us. Our real estate agents understand the importance of decor on a space, especially when you're getting ready to sell your home.

But decor isn't just important when you're listing Fairfax homes for sale. It also has an impact on your day-to-day happiness and wellbeing. Decor can make your home feel warm, welcoming, cozy, spacious — really any way you want it to feel. And it all starts with finding your style.

  1. Start With the Bones
Look past your current decor and consider your home's natural features or its "bones." Take a good look at what's already there and, especially, decide what you like. This can be the basis for how you move forward with decorating.

For example, if you live in a historic home with beautiful crown molding, antique doorframes, and other old-world features, you can use those features to set your decorative compass. In this example, you might want to look for decor and furniture with a warm, somewhat vintage feel. If your architecture is more modern, it might point you in a different direction altogether.

  2. Browse for Inspiration
Ideas usually don't appear out of thin air. More often, you have to go looking for them. That's okay because there are a lot of great sources of inspiration out there! Pick up a couple of home decor magazines, and start flipping through.

Of course, there's a lot of inspiration online, too, as anyone who's gone into a Pinterest spiral will attest. There's a risk of overload, and it can be hard to hone in on a particular style, but pinning all your favorite ideas to your own board can be a great way to see what might work.

  3. Look Around You
Start by taking an inventory of all your furniture and decor. Eliminate anything you don't like, and use the pieces you do like as the basis for your home makeover. When you go shopping for new decor, you can then look for things that match your favorite pieces you already have, eventually creating a cohesive style.

  4. Check the Closet
Picking out clothing can be a lot easier and less overwhelming than picking out decor. With that in mind, head to your closet and take an overview of all your favorite clothes. Pick out the staples, the items of clothing that are always in rotation.

Think about why you like these particular items. Consider the colors, the patterns, the textures, the fabrics. These are the building blocks of your style, and they can easily be used to form the foundation for the way you decorate your home.

  5. Do It Yourself
Not everybody is an experienced DIY-er, but there are many home design fixes that just about anybody can do themselves. Installing new cabinet hardware, hanging new curtains, and putting up shelves are all fun and easy projects you can do in an afternoon.

Even putting in new flooring and light fixtures isn't nearly as hard as you might think. Painting is another great example. Start with one room, or even a single accent wall, and get to work. Few things can transform a space in the blink of an eye quite like a fresh new color.
