DC Kitchen Appliances

Your kitchen is one of the most important rooms in your home, and its appliances can have a lot to say about how the space looks and functions. Older appliances can make everything from storing food to preparing meals more difficult and time-consuming.

Although you may be tempted to put off upgrading your kitchen appliances, it's an investment that can pay big dividends as you live in and enjoy your home. A kitchen appliance upgrade can also make your home compete more favorably with other Fairfax homes for sale or Alexandria homes for sale if you decide to put it on the market, our real estate agents point out.

The following are 5 good reasons to upgrade your kitchen appliances:

  1. The ones you have aren't energy-efficient
If you have older kitchen appliances, they probably aren't as energy-efficient as the newer models. Buying new, more energy-efficient models isn't just environmentally friendly, it will also help cut down on the amount of electricity or gas you use – and pay for – to operate the appliances.

  2. They're not functioning well
It can be frustrating when your appliances are still working, but they're not functioning as they're intended to. Maybe your oven takes too long to heat up, or your refrigerator's ice maker no longer works, and getting it repaired will cost more than it's worth. You might be tempted to hold onto them until the bitter end when they completely stop working. But if you go ahead and replace them, you'll find that you enjoy cooking and other kitchen tasks much more.

  3. They're approaching – or are beyond – their average life expectancy
Once your appliances are approaching their average life expectancy, the cost to repair them will probably be more than they're worth, and their problems are likely to get worse. Microwaves, dishwashers, and trash compactors should last about nine years, while freezers, disposals, and refrigerators last about 10-13 years. Finally, overhead stove hoods and ranges last for approximately 14 to 15 years.

  4. Your appliances don't match
Many people end up with mismatched appliances as one may fail and is replaced with a unit that doesn't match the others. This can continue until you have a kitchen full of unmatched appliances, making the room look cluttered. Upgrading all your appliances at the same time will give your kitchen an attractive, cohesive look.

  5. They're noisy, even after repairs
If your dishwasher, refrigerator, or other kitchen appliances are so noisy that they bother you as you're trying to relax, talk on the phone, or watch TV, it's time to look at replacing them. Over time, the noise will likely become even worse, and a replacement is probably warranted. This is especially true if you've tried quick, relatively inexpensive repairs, yet the problem has persisted.
